WOOD, ACRYLIC, and FABRIC OH MY!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers and mother figures out there tonight. I hope you all had a banner day-Cameron and I surely did because Diablo (the name for the laser that happened organically) is OPERATIONAL! I have a lot of videos below. A reminder here that you have to go to the WordPress website in order to view them, but today we successfully engraved wood, cut 1/4” acrylic, engraved that acrylic, and most astounding of all because it’s something we had not been able to get from samples sent to a laser manufacturer, we cut white 100% cotton with zero charring! The implications of this for me as a textile artist with hands that are no longer at 100% are enormous! I am BESIDE MYSELF EXCITED to have been able to dial in a clean cut on white cotton which means every other color of fabric will be a cake walk!

We are just getting started, there is more alignment to be done along with fine tuning calibrations, but I’m thrilled with the results of our test runs today and probably won’t sleep tonight.

One more thing, a big shout out to my AMAZING husband who hustled his buns not only today so we could cut, but has been grinding for months to birth Diablo. He’s a total genius for whom I have both deep love and respect. A few of you who know us personally know that Cameron has always supported and enabled my creative pursuits with the same dedication and sincerity he devotes to his own professional and creative interests. This tool will empower us both to do the kinds of projects we could only wish for until now. So mad props to Cameron and to everyone in the Rezo builder community who has so generously shared their experiences and knowledge with him to make this dream a reality. And now, the eye candy!

Still need to peel the paper off the acrylic and screw it all in place. Cameron created a temporary rig so we could play tonight!
Wood engraving with a test pattern on 1/4” plywood. I had no idea it would cut all the way through the wood????
Final non calibrated result. We expect cleaner results post calibration and after further alignment of the laser.
Ooops! This is out of sequence. It should precede the one above but they take so long to load that I’m going to leave it here.
Cutting acrylic while I mess up the narrative over and over again. Luckily Cameron corrects me. I’m still learning.
Result of cut plus engraving of the acrylic.

We learned that we should engrave the clear side of the acrylic and expect a cleaner engraving once the needed adjustments are made to the laser. I have more videos to share but WP is saying I’m out of room so we are going to see if we can buy more space. If not, I’ll upload the rest of the videos to my YouTube channel and post links to them here. Soooo frustrating.
