Hey everybody! I know it probably seems as though we have been dormant so far this year but the truth is, I’ve been enthralled with my new longarm and Cameron has been exploring some CNC router projects but hasn’t made them yet. He’s in the gathering information and testing of router bits phase with those. We have, however, made a gift that I can show now that the recipients have it in hand, and that’s what you see below.

Our good friends John and Andrea bought their dream home, their forever home on the gorgeous Oregon coast and we wanted to make something special to mark this long awaited milestone. The laser is the perfect tool for creating personal gifts that stand the test of time.
Given how much wood we have engraved and cut so far we didn’t anticipate how much debris clearing this project would necessitate. The video below shows the different approaches we took to identify the most efficient way to go about producing the coasters. Spoiler alert, we didn’t end up with a method that was significantly better or different than the other, but if anyone is interested in seeing what we tried and the corresponding results the video below demonstrates the tedium of the cleanup in real time.
I didn’t film the cutting of the layered map/wall hanging because we already have a video featuring that process and it’s identical in that there is a base layer with water, a terrain layer, and a street layer. My one regret here is that I didn’t photograph the project without the frame so you could see what an enormous difference the frame makes. Cameron is so very skilled at woodworking; I guess you’ll have to trust me that the frame takes this map from good to beautiful. if I recall correctly, the piece measures 20 inches tall. I’m fuzzy on it in that it was made months ago and I no longer retain those details in my head unless I write them down!
Spring has sprung here and I’m no fan of the heat so I hope to film more projects from the consistently cool basement as the mercury climbs. Thanks for looking in on us and hey, go make something awesome!
