Wood inlays

Hi everybody!

I’m back with a new laser adventure (new to us, that is) and as with all new ventures, there is a learning curve. In the interest of helping others by showing our mistakes I have a real time video below of the process. Fast forward as you if you’re primarily interested in the end result.

We have been immersed in non laser projects; one of the ironies of having lots of different interests and machines is that the more you have, the less time you spend with each of them! It’s a good problem to have though so no complaints!

Unvarnished and imperfect experiments

We bought some wood veneers, a variety pack of species, as well as a special foil manufactured for use with lasers and inlays so those experiments will be coming up later this month. We don’t have kerf down quite right yet, so more tinkering with that lies ahead too.

It won’t come as any surprise that I wanted to combine the art of quilting with laser art for something fun. We made these traditional quilt blocks into ornaments and magnet sets. I might give acrylic a try with these too for a different spin but I kind of like the rustic charm of the warm wood tones, particularly on the 2” square magnets. On the fridge they beckon you to escape the kitchen and retreat to your sewing space. In the sewing room they hold up patterns, reference photos, instructions, or what have you.

I like that you can use different seasonally themed prints, a favorite print, or just wood on wood in contrasting tones. I’m thinking of stringing the whole set from a dowel in my sewing room even though I don’t do much in the way of traditional quilt blocks; these designs are foundational to the contemporary/modern themes that have flowed from them.

Thank you as always for the time you took to look in on us. We hope that you’re all looking forward to some fun this autumn; go make something great!
