We bought a new toy!

I suppose it is a natural progression once you get into the laser space…we have added a CNC router and a new Husky tool cart with an extension table! They both came today!

CNC’s need stability!
Yay!

Our friend and neighbor Kurt came to our rescue once again; this thing had to go around the back of the house and down 11 concrete steps to get into our basement. I have no idea how we would have done it without him! Thank you Kurt! Cameron owes you some croissants!

Then the CNC came.

A happy husband!
Very well packed!
Assembly underway!

I’m mulling how to treat/publish the CNC content now that we’ve added a machine. Even the word “build” in the blog title has long been a misnomer. I write a separate sewing centric blog as well; a third blog would be too much. I have to figure out if I can re-title this one without changing the URL since we do have an established audience for this one. Will people who are interested in laser projects be interested in CNC projects? Maybe the blog becomes a “something for everyone” or a broader maker blog. I’m open if anyone has ideas!

For anyone who is interested, we bought the Genmitsu Prover XL 6050 PLUS (what a mouthful) because it has a 20”x24” cutting area. We are really squeezing this into the shop that is already quite crowded. A tool/machine relocation program is underway as some of the saws and carts move to our garage to make space. Eventually, one bay of the garage will house the wood shop except for the CNC.

Cameron says the instructions for the CNC assembly are quite good and that it is comprised of quality, well fabricated parts that are heavy duty. The machine can also be upgraded with more powerful spindles so we like that option. Wood, aluminum, brass, and plastics can be cut, carved, and engraved with it though we will stick with the laser for acrylic. Also, people carve wax molds with this CNC for jewelry making. And, it can be fitted with a laser as well so for anyone who doesn’t already have a laser this is a great machine because it can be dual use. It’s another leg of the adventure; thank you to Steve of “Steve Makes Everything” on YouTube; you have been a big help and are a trusted guide!

Tomorrow we are going on a field trip to Rockler! I just found out they have a Fairfax location and they’re having a big sale! Woot woot! Cameron says he has a bit of wiring left to do and then the router is ready for use.

Thanks for reading and, as always, stay tuned!

Dana

  1. A Guiney

My mom, when I was growing up, used to watch This Old House and would announce repeatedly, during a segment that might feature it, that she would love to have a router. When my dad would ask her why, she’d answer: Because then I could route things! Like what? Anything I wanted to! ????????

    1. Cameron’s Rezo Laser Build

Your mom would probably love this one then because it runs off of digital files just like the laser! Cameron has a regular manual router too; you can actually mount it to the CNC if you want to but Cameron says he prefers the spindle because it’s quieter than the router when mounted to the CNC.
